Life for Dee Stanton is improving at every turn. Her legal career is blossoming and her boyfriend, teacher Dominic unexpectedly proposes to her. It’s a far cry from 11 years ago when her husband Paul was jailed for the brutal murders of four girls and Dee was hounded from her home. Dee has kept her secret from everyone, including her son Jamie. But her happiness is threatened when 15-year-old Jamie is accused of stalking and discovers the truth about his dad. He demands to see him and there is an immediate bond between them. Then a girl is found strangled.
Dee Stanton is in the mood for celebrating. Her boss is paying for her to do a law degree and her love life with teacher Dominic Milne is blossoming. But Dee’s son Jamie, 15, resents Dominic’s intrusion into his sheltered life. He’d rather listen to stories about his father, a heroic RAF pilot who died for his country in the Middle East.
A widower, Dominic is Head of English at Jamie’s school. At parents evening, he tells Dee that 6th former Morag Tait has complained that Jamie has been stalking her. Jamie is humiliated and ruins Dee’s barbecue by shouting at Dominic.
Morag, a friend of Dominic’s 17-year-old daughter Bethan, is sexually provocative and teases another girl Abi with her diary detailing her exploits with an older man.
When Dominic unexpectedly proposes to Dee, she is forced into a confession. Her first husband isn’t dead – in fact he is the notorious serial killer Paul Barker, who was convicted of the brutal murders of four young women. Named, shamed and hounded from her home, Dee took Jamie and headed south for a new life and anonymity. She is determined that Jamie must never know the truth.
Dominic is shocked – as is Jamie who is eavesdropping. Using the Internet, he looks into the eyes of his real father. Dominic tells Bethan what has happened and swears her to secrecy. But it isn’t long before Dee’s secret starts to spread among her friends. Jamie confronts Dee and demands to meet his father. She takes him to Duncton, a secure mental hospital for the criminally insane. To her horror, Jamie is in awe of his charming and manipulative father – who like him loves drawing.
One day, Morag throws herself into Dominic’s arms after class and the head teacher Mrs Sutton finds them. Dominic is suspended. Later that afternoon, Morag is found strangled in the woods. Her diary is missing. Dominic is taken in for questioning and Dee’s nightmare returns. Then Bethan confides in her about her mother’s suicide. Could Dominic be the killer?
Part 2, Tuesday 25 January 2005: ITV1/ 21:00 - 22:30
UK Viewing figures: 7.4 million viewers (32%)
As Dominic fights to keep his job, Dee fears her son Jamie is falling under the spell of his father, serial killer Paul Barker. First Jamie is questioned over the death of Morag, then he’s found wrestling with a ligature around her friend Abi’s neck. A horrified Dee finds Jamie has a new tattoo, just like his dad’s. He claims he was having it done when Morag was killed. But he is still charged with her murder and the attempted murder of the comatose Abi. To Dee’s surprise, Bethan says she is to blame. Can Dee find the truth in the midst of tragedy?
When forensic evidence suggests a child may have killed Morag, Jamie is questioned. Dee gives him a false alibi and Jamie is angry. Looking in his bedroom, Dee begins to fear that her son is falling under the malign spell of his father, serial killer Paul Barker. She’s also shocked by the revelation that her boyfriend Dominic’s alcoholic wife Sandy killed herself because he was having an affair with a former pupil.
An LEA tribunal convenes to consider the accusations against Dominic. The evidence is compelling if only circumstantial. Jamie confronts Abi for spreading rumours and later witnesses an angry exchange between Bethan and Abi.
After a long day, Dominic is cleared. But head teacher Mrs Sutton returns to school to find Jamie astride Abi, wrestling with a ligature around her neck. At the police investigate and Abi is taken to hospital, fighting for her life, Jamie fails to convince them that he found Abi hanging and tried to save her. Bethan visits the hospital and apologises to her comatose friend.
Jamie is taken into custody and his false alibi is disproved by police. He is forced to show them a replica of his father’s tattoo, newly inscribed on his forearm. He claims it was done at the time of the murder, but the tattooist denies working on Jamie. He is charged with the murder of Morag Tait and the attempted murder of Abi Taylor. He is allowed to spend the night at home and a shaken Dee finds herself contemplating a bottle of sleeping pills when she makes his cocoa. The next day, Dee and Dominic take Jamie back to the police station together. Left alone in a cell he wets himself.
Bethan is devastated when the doctors advise Abi’s parents to switch off the life support machine. She heads for the school and pulls out Morag’s diary from a panel above the girls’ toilets. She leaves it for her father and tries to call him. Then she gets through to Dee and tells her it is all her fault. Worried for Bethan’s safety, Dee races to the school.
On the roof, Dee confronts Bethan, who claims she is responsible for everything – her mother’s death, Morag’s and Abi’s. She’s going to end her life just as her mother did. As the teenager prepares to jump, Dee tries to distract her by asking what happened. Will she find out the truth? And can Bethan be saved?
